ABOUT  

The Uganda International Student Film Festival is a three day annual event showing students films around the world. It aims at boosting student’s energy through exposing local and foreign films to abroad audience as well,   encouraging and inspiring film student to make more films. Uganda international student’s festival is offering film student and filmmakers from all over the world a unique opportunity to share their voice and vision with a wider audience and creating career opportunities. It is an artistic opportunity and open platform for students to showcase their talent and creativity in the visual arts.

The Uganda International Students Film Festival is to encourage cultural diversity and understanding between students, to foster their films by stimulating the development of quality films, to promote young filmmakers and innovative works, to discover and encourage new talents, and to promote meetings between film professionals from around the world.

Uganda International students film festival will not only attract film students but all the film makers around the world including  producers ,script writers, directors, cinematographers who will be sharing their knowledge and experience in their journey of filmmaking thus inspiring young talented filmmakers.

Goals/Objectives

Education/Film Knowledge and skills. The festival will attract different film makers who will be sharing their experience in filmmaking through panel discussions and workshops. Students will be able to acquire film education thus skills and experience that they will use during the making of their own films.

Partnerships & ConnectionsThe festival is about bringing people together, people behind the scenes and in front of the camera come to interact regardless of their experience and finally connect. The partnership between different organisation and togetherness will lead to the development of critical voice in society as well as to raise the state of the local film industry.  For the first start, the festival is being organised by Phimo Media Company in partnership with Film and Video Training Institutions Association (FVTIA)

Create Platform. The festival will provide a platform that will introduce student’s film to the broadest audience possible therefore it is an artistic opportunity for students to showcase their talent and creativity though films.

Promote Arts and culture diversity. Film making is art, through culture and arts is promoted. The festival will encourage students to do more films by sharing the different ideas on how to approach and identifying possible stories especially in Africa and the world.

Improve on film Production Quality. The festival will be recognising, different aspects of filmmaking in different categories such as Best cinematography, Best Screen Play, Sound, Editing, Documentary etc. The different categories will be awarded to recognize different talents and increase the competition among students when they are still at school and after school.

Background

In the recent years, there has been an emergence of film training institutions and film departments in Universities in East Africa, Africa and the whole world. The film production mainly in East Africa is still low and synonymous with low quality production which leads to the scarcity of films.  There is a great need for professional practical training in art of filmmaking. Students need more platforms to show case their creativity which can boost their energy in making more films and get involved in their career. This will help to improve on the quality of films.

In line with above, Film and Video Training institutions association in Uganda (FVTIA) with Phimo Media  have decided to hold “Uganda International Students Film Festival’’. The festival is intending to create a platform for the film students to showcase their films at the same time connecting and sharing their experience. The aim is to boost their energy, increase the competition and improve the quality of films by student’s right from school.

Phimo Media 

Phimo Media is a visual production company that mainly produce documentary and short fiction films. We focus on both local and international productions, which emerge through their original approach and the unique style. We strategies the unique way of telling both local and international stories.

Phimo Media was established in 2017 and it is based in Kampala Uganda. Its founders Phoebe and Molly are profession film makers and they have been working in Uganda’s film industry for over five years. Having worked with Kampala Film School for a period of five years, they have the much experience at the managerial level, art of filmmaking, passion and commitment towards telling African Stories.

FVTIA

Film and Video Training Institutions Association (FVTIA) is a registered non-government organization bringing together all local film and video training institutions in Uganda. The purpose of the Association is to unite, build capacity, and offer a platform for all local film & video training institutions to express their concerns and contribute towards the development of Uganda’s film and video industry.

Founded in 2018, under the need of having a common voice for filming schools in Uganda , FVTIA is the leading country association of education institutions in film studies from around the country. FVTIA brings together its Members from the whole country for reflection and action on common priorities. FVTIA is an independent, non-governmental organization.  It acts as the voice of film education in Uganda and other international film education organizations, and provides a global forum for leaders of film institutions. Its services are available on the priority basis to Members but also to organizations, institutions and authorities concerned with film education, as well as to individual policy and decision-makers, specialists, administrators, film teachers, researchers and film students.
